Despite the neighbouring towns of Narrandera and Griffith being set down as relay destinations, Leeton has been left off the list. 

The baton will take in those towns on January 28, with Wagga also a destination on the same day. It then travels on to places like West Wyalong, Parkes, Orange and Wellington. 

Leeton Shire Council’s communications and marketing co-ordinator Brent Lawrence was disappointed for the town to be left out. 

“Leeton is a strong sporting town that has produced many talented people over the years,” he said.

“It is always nice to have an opportunity to recognise and celebrate those people where possible.

“It would have been (goof) to be considered. however the baton relay does follow a circuit that is determined by Commonwealth Games event management officials.”

The Commonwealth Games are set to be held on the Gold Coast next year, with the opening ceremony set down for April 4. Setting off in Australia on Christmas Day, the baton will travel for 100 days.

However, while Leeton does miss out, there is still an opportunity to see the baton or be part of the relay. Residents can nominate a person they believe would be a worthy “batonbearer”. 

Batonbearers can be people of all abilities who inspire others and represent a community with pride to showcase to the world the region’s great people, sporting achievements, cultural history and natural landscapes. Mr Lawrence also encouraged residents to take in the relay where they could. 

“The Commonwealth Games has been a great starting point for athletes that have originated from Leeton and throughout the Riverina region,” he said. “Regardless of the circuit the baton relay is following, Leeton shire residents are urged to show their support when it passes through our neighbouring towns.” Nominations can be made at https://www.gc2018.com/qbr.
