Cars are being used as weapons like never before.
It’s horrific and we’ve seen it happen here in Australia.
No, it wasn’t a terror attack, but it certainly did inflict death and terror among many when a rampaging madman drove through Melbourne’s busy CBD area killing innocent people.
The incident in London was similar to what happened in France and in Germany just before Christmas.
Terrorists don’t need to have any training in combat warfare nor do they need to know the ins and outs of bomb making.
They just need to have a grasp on the simple task of driving and a death wish.
This sort of terrorism makes life extremely difficult for those working to combat terrorism across the globe.
In this most recent instance in London here if someone who had been in jail, but his last offence was in 2003 and not related to terror.
How are armed forces and specialised intelligence supposed to prevent this?
Unfortunately, the answer is pretty damn overwhelming.
They simply can’t and it is unfair for any of us to think they can.
Sure, there are obviously people out there that are monitored and many attacks, even in Australia, have been foiled thanks to these intelligence agencies.
Even if a suspected terrorist is being monitored – what are these forces supposed to do?
Stop them every time they get behind a vehicle? Certainly not. Months of hard work could be blown in an instant.
For the every day person it’s probably difficult for us to understand just how deep these intelligence agencies go in their work and what they have really achieved.
All we see is the devastation of these attacks, not the countless others that have saved thousands of lives.
All the rest of us can do is continue to be vigilant, but also keep living life, including travelling to these places, as one would normally do.
It’s essential normal life isn’t disrupted and London did a great job in putting on a brave face to the world. If life isn’t lived normally – as is so often said “the terrorists have won”.
