St Francis College staff and students again participated in the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea last Thursday, an event which has become a tradition at the school.
The event is attended by year 12 students, who assist with the cooking, as well as staff.
As a result, the 2017 morning tea raised $1000.
While the idea is to raise as much money as possible for the Cancer Council during the morning tea, there is also an an extra element to the day each year.
Later in the day a cake auction is held to raise funds for Can Assist branches.
This year money raised will be going to the Leeton, Ardlethan and Coleambally branches.
The auction involves each pastoral care class at the school to create and bake their own cake and every year the baked goods become even bigger and better than the year before.
St Francis College library assistant Carol Lang said a whopping $6635 was raised as a result in 2017.
“Each class creates their own cake … they look amazing every year,” she said.
“Then they nominate a bidder for the auction.
“Most of the time they bid on their own cake to buy it back, but in some cases they might like the look of another one and go for it.
“That tends to drive the price up.”
Mrs Lang said there was an element of competition every year as each class does their own fundraising to assist in buying the cakes.
This year one cake went for $300.
“That’s the highest amount we’ve ever had for one cake since we’ve been doing it,” Mrs Lang said.
“I think there’s a bit of competition to see who can raise the most money and who has the best-looking cake.”
Many of the cakes created look as though they have been baked by professional chefs.
At the end of the auction each pastoral care group gets together to enjoy the spoils of their labour by sharing and eating the cakes together.
“We’re extremely pleased with the result this year,” Mrs Lang said.
