WITH bills piling up, the last thing many parents want to do is fork out more cash, even if it is for a special occasion.
Last week The Irrigator posted a news article on its Facebook page about a campaign in the Hunter that is helping bring formal wear to those who may not be able to afford it.
It was an idea Leeton’s SteppinOut4Youth president Anna Celi jumped on straight away.
“We saw the post and thought ‘that’s a really cool idea’,” she said.
“We had a bit of a discussion and agreed every girl should look like a princess on her grad day.
“It’s so expensive to pay for all of these things, so we thought this was one really great way that we could help out.” The response from the community has been enormous.
Close to 50 dresses of all shapes, colours and varieties have already been donated. SteppinOut4Youth also hopes to have businesses come on board to do the hair and makeup of at least two or three recipients of the dresses.
Those wanting to take advantage of the offer can contact Mrs Celi or the SteppinOut4Youth Facebook page on a first in, best dressed basis.
“I think even with girls buying online … it gets here and it’s not fitting or there’s something wrong with it, so it’s not worth it,” Mrs Celi said.
“We might need not that many dresses, but obviously it will give the girls some variety, which is nice.
“If the girls inbox us or their parents inbox us they can come and have a try on and take what they like.” Mrs Celi was not surprised the idea took off like it did.
She said the Leeton community had always been willing to jump on board and help each other when it’s most needed. “It’s been really incredible,” Mrs Celi said.
“That’s the really awesome thing. You put it out there and people are always happy and willing to jump on board.” SteppinOut4Youth’s winter initiative outside the Dentists of Leeton in the main street is also continuing.
Residents feeling the cold can feel free to take a jumper or jacket at no cost. Community members can also donate to the rack by simply hanging up an item they no longer have a need for.
