Townsend is still coming to terms with his rise to fame after kicking two goals in Richmond’s drought-breaking premiership win in front of 100,000 fans at the MCG.
The Tigers capped off a remarkable season with a 48-point win over Adelaide, winning the club’s first premiership since 1980 in emphatic fashion, 16.12 (108) to 8.12 (60).
Townsend had not played an AFL game this season until round 22 and suddenly six weeks later he is a premiership star.
“It’s good obviously, very good,” Townsend told Channel Seven after the game.
“I’m lost for words here for a bit. I can’t believe it.
“Obviously three or four weeks ago I wasn’t sure what I was doing so to be here and playing in a flag, I can’t believe it.”
Townsend, 24, had eight disposals and kicked two goals, while limiting the influence of Adelaide defender Jake Lever.
It gave Townsend a return of 16.2 from 32 kicks in five AFL games this year.
The win also continued an amazing week for the town of Leeton.
Leeton-Whitton ended their 39-year premiership drought last Saturday week, and seven days later they watched on as a club junior became an AFL premiership player.
