Traditionally, the Leeton Chamber of Commerce and Industry comes up with a unique idea to promote Christmas buying in the shire in order to boost the economy.
However, this year a promotion won’t be going ahead, mostly due to the chamber’s manpower.
The chamber is still actively promoting and asking all residents to do their part this festive season by supporting local businesses.
Matt Gatt, who was only recently elected as president, said it came down to a lack of personnel on the ground and time getting away.
However, he said the chamber would always push for residents to buy local no matter the time of year, but especially when it came to the busy Christmas period.
“I have been able to do all of my shopping in town this year,” Mr Gatt said.
“I would think there’s nothing you can’t get in Leeton.
“Most of the time if something isn’t here, all you need to do is ask the appropriate business and they will get it in.
“It’s a shame we haven’t been able to get a promotion up this year, but I think everyone knows how important it is (to shop local).
“I would say this year our businesses in Leeton are being very competitive when it comes to prices and the stock they have.
“There shouldn’t be a need to go out-of-town.”
Following the end of the festive period, the chamber will again be surveying businesses and collecting data on just how much was spent in town.
That collection of data from businesses is something the chamber does each year.
Mr Gatt said with the festive season about to launch into full swing, businesses should also consider opening their doors for Sunday trade.
He said some had already done so, which was pleasing.
“I think it’s a great idea for businesses to be opening their doors on Sunday, but it is a two-way street,” Mr Gatt said.
“If the shops are opening, we need people in there supporting them.
“I would like to see it happen year-round really, but obviously it depends on each store.”
