The men of the shire were called on to particularly show their support by being part of a special White Ribbon Day event on Thursday.
The idea was to take time out of their day to say “they won’t stand for violence against women”.
A huge crowd of both men and women turned out from all walks of life to support the initiative, which was organised by St Francis College teacher Ian Pettit and Leeton Shire Council’s Sarah Collis.
Police, paramedics, school students, business owners and their employees, council staff, firefighters and more were among those fighting for the protection of women.
St Francis College principal Seb Spina was the MC and wanted the group to be aware just how dire the domestic violence situation still was.
“As principal of St Francis, I am acutely aware that one in four students in Australia are effected by domestic violence,” he said.
“White Ribbon Day and the associated activities are an opportunity, particularly for men, to say ‘no’ to domestic violence, but we also welcome women joining us today.”
Domestic violence, or family violence, is violent, abusive or intimidating behaviour in a relationship.
There are many types of domestic violence, including social, physical, sexual and emotional.
The group gathered on the day in Leeton outside the Roxy Theatre where a group photo was taken to prove the point that violence against women will not be tolerated.
Mr Spina said it was about to the entire community to play a part in putting a stop to domestic violence.
“Most importantly, we would like you to remember this number – 1300 RESPECT – this is a domestic violence hotline which can be accessed by anyone impacted upon by domestic violence,” he said.
“Please remember this number.
“Violence against women is never appropriate.”
Women or men in an abusive relationship should use this number to gain help, but police can also be contacted.
For residents of Leeton it’s important to keep an eye out for this type of behaviour and report it where possible.
