We were returning late at night from a function in Darlington Point, I in my sedan and my friend following in his little old ute.

While slowing down for roadworks near a channel crossing a big male grey kangaroo hopped unexpectedly into my headlight beam, an unwelcome surprise. The thought that leapt unbidden into my mind as I hit the anchors was that either the roo would wipe out the front of my car or my friend in his little old ute would wipe out the back (or, perhaps, both).
Christmas is sometimes like that, isn’t it?
Jesus hops unbidden into our consciousness at Christmas time, as we celebrate His birthday. It can be confronting as we suddenly remember what we learned as children about Jesus wanting us “for sunbeams”.
Alternatively, at Christmas we may be unavoidably surprised by past friends or relatives who have abused, ill-treated or bested us and we can react angrily at the memory of old hurts. These deep pains can threaten to come crashing in on our Christmas festivities, spoiling them not only for us but for our family, as well.
Fortunately, the roo thought better of crossing the road in front of me, turned and hopped back the way he came - disaster averted!
At Christmas, Jesus reminds us of His claim on our lives but He never forces Himself on us. He came into the world, not to condemn it but to save it.
If you struggle to let bygones be bygones at Christmas and to find the peace that the season promises, think again about letting Jesus into your life. Only He can show you how to really forgive others.
Christmas celebrates the tradition of the undeserved gift. The modern emphasis on Santa’s naughty and nice lists dishonours that tradition.
Why not choose someone to surprise with an undeserved gift this Christmas? In doing so, you may find it possible to forgive past hurts and gain the peace of God in your own life.
Jesus promises inner peace and healing. Why not come to church this Christmas and find out how? May the peace of God be yours this festive season.
