Councillor George Weston has been against Yanco receiving the splash pad since the idea was first floated through a petition.
His main argument against the installation of the water feature in McCaughey Park at Yanco was it set an unfair precedent.
Cr Weston said the petition didn’t gain a huge amount of signatures and wondered why Leeton Shire Council should have to back and put funds toward something when he said it “appeared to have little support”.
His claims it wasn’t an idea fully supported by the Yanco community was rubbished by mayor Paul Maytom, who said the town was 100 per cent behind the concept.
“We’re not debating whether we spend the money … we’ve already done that and adopted the motion (to go ahead with the splash pad),” councillor Maytom said.

Councillor Michael Kidd backed up the mayor when he said it was council’s duty to go through with the splash pad after the town’s pool was closed in 2009.
At that time council said it would look at other options for the town to ensure a way of enduring hot summers.
“This is most importantly and foremost in my mind … a matter of council honouring a promise made to Yanco by council a number of years ago when the pool was closed,” Cr Kidd said.
“It was made two previous councils ago … I think it should be honoured and I think Yanco people have been right to hold council to answer on that.”
Residents had been hopeful the splash pad would be installed in time for summer this year, but with the design only recently approved by council and time allowed for construction, it won’t be ready until half way through this year.
However, that is something the community of Yanco was fine with “as long as it gets installed we’re happy”.
Council’s manager open space and recreation Josh Clyne said in his report to council that operational costs would be negligible and incorporated into the general maintenance program for McCaughey Park.
“Following a review of various playground equipment suppliers, council engaged Australian-owned company PlayRope, who supply Vortex Splash Pad componentry, to prepare the detailed design and costings,” Mr Clyne said.
“The different equipment that forms part of the splash pad design caters for a wide age range, will be operated using a timer to conserve water use and has disability access incorporated into the design.
“The splash pad area will also be fenced and there is adequate water supply and pressure available.
“No additional water infrastructure is required.”
A working budget of $65,000 was authorised by council with community contributions from the Yanco Lions Club, Yanco Hall Committee and former councillor Peter Woods and his family also contributing to the cost, which could reduce the amount of money council supplies.
Cr Maytom said the addition of this new facility had potential for greater usage of McCaughey Park.
“Council is pleased to be able to respond to the community’s request for a water feature in Yanco for all of the children of Leeton shire to enjoy during the warmer months,” he said.
“McCaughey Park is an ideal location as it is already a popular destination for both locals and visitors.”
