Despite the summer temperatures keeping some lawns from looking their best, many residents are putting their heart and soul into ensuring their front and backyard grass is looking schmick.
Social media has helped residents to get into the spirit of maintaining their lawns to a high standard and many are now posting their pride and joy to their private pages.
The Irrigator went to an expert who knows just what it takes to have the perfect lawn.
Leeton and District Bowling Club green keeper Mick Gooley said there was plenty residents could be doing even during the current heatwave to ensure lawns stay at their greenest and healthiest.
“For a start, it’s not all about watering in small amounts various times during the week,” the lawn aficionado said.
“With the greens here I like to do a big water on a Sunday and Monday night … when you’re doing small watering it does nothing for the roots, but when it’s a big soak they go searching for the moisture and that helps.
“Generally speaking it’s also about weed and feed and getting rid of any weeds, as well as fertilising.”
With the current heatwave, Mr Gooley was certain those who were committed to ensuring their lawns stayed perfect, would be spending a lot of money.
“You can definitely see the ones that would be spending a lot of money to keep their lawns looking good at the moment,” he joked.
“Hopefully we get the odd thunderstorm or two in the coming weeks. The lightning and the rain allows nitrogen to fall and that really gives the lawns a boost. That’s why after a storm you’ll notice lawns coming back to life. You can water and water all you like, but those storms actually help more sometimes.”
Getting the timing of mowing right, as well as not cutting grass too short was also key to a luscious green lawn according to Mr Gooley.
