After the Stags won the toss and elected to field, it was going to be essential for their side to take early wickets with the dangerous Reece Maguire at the crease.
Steve Campbell and Maguire were able to get 20 on the board before Dionisio Pantano struck to remove Campbell (8) and Daniel Muir (1).
Maguire (31) took the lead in a 21-run partnership with Adrian Axtill (1) before Pantano (4/32) struck again to remove the pair and reduce the Ferrets to 4/44.
Maclean Crompton (15) and Richard Smith (16) rebuilt their innings well with a 34-run stand before Jameson Booth came into the attack to dismissed both batters within five runs.
Ferrets captain Ben Elwin came out looking to add much needed run to get his side into a competitive position, and in a 36-run partnership with Mat Axtill (6), the pair were able to get their side over the 100-mark.
Elwin (54) continued his push for runs with Sam Alampi (10) joining him before Grant Forrest (3/23) took the last three wickets for no runs to see the Ferrets bowled out for 157 in 48 overs.
Forrest continued his form into the Stags innings with an opening stand which has pushed the game in favour of the Stags.
Matt Dedini and Forrest were able to put on 61 inside 11 overs before Dedini (23) was stumped by Smith off the bowling of Adrian Axtill (1/33).
Forrest continued his push for runs as he brought up his almost run-a-ball 50, which included seven boundaries, before he fell to Daniel Muir with three overs remaining in the day.
Nathan Tang and Stags captain David Tiffin looked to see off the final 18 ball of the day, but with one ball remaining in the first day of play, Tiffin (0) fell to the bowling of Muir (2/10).
The Stags will resume day two on 3/82 off 20 overs with Tang (3*) and Hugh Collins (0*) at the crease with their side needing a further 75 runs to secure first innings points.
