The pair woke at around 3.15am in their home on Elberta Street when they allegedly heard sounds coming from another room.
When the intruder became aware the residents had woken up, he fled through the back door.
It is alleged he came through a window and stole cash from a purse in the kitchen.
The intruder is described as being a male standing around 180cm tall, wearing a baseball cap and dark clothing.
In other news, several residents in Rosewood Lane residents have allegedly been targeted by thieves.
Residents returned on Saturday February 17 after enjoying a few days away, when on their return noticed a gate and a screen door were ajar.
It wasn’t until Wednesday afternoon they realised someone had allegedly entered the home through a window, but nothing had been identified as stolen.
Other residents from a home on Rosewood Lane also suspect someone tried to break in earlier in the week, after returning home, once again from being away a couple of days, and finding fly screens had been removed from their windows.
Police ask anyone with information about the alleged break and enters to contact Leeton police on 6953 1399.
