Leeton Shire Council has approved the installation of warning lights at the Murrami Road intersection, which has been the scene of many serious accidents over the years. The most horrific was a fatal accident some years ago where a vehicle failed to give way at the crossroads intersection.
The same stretch of long road has also had many accidents, but this time council is focusing on this one area and hopes it will improve the situation.
The cost will be determined by council in its next quarterly review. Murrami Road provides a cross road intersection between Irrigation Way and is heavily used.
Mayor Paul Maytom hopes the warning lights will do their job in reducing the number of accidents.
“There is little warning to drivers on the secondary roads that they are approaching a major intersection with fast moving traffic,” he said. “The risks are evidenced by a series of major incidents – some fatal and many near misses.”
Council staff investigated a number of measures to improve the safety of the intersection. These included installation of rumble strips and illuminated warning signs that include lights indicating the intersection is ahead triggered by oncoming traffic.
Council’s previous applications for Black Spot funding at the intersection have been unsuccessful, but a further approach will be made to Roads and Maritime Services to see if the cost of the work can be shared.
