It certainly wasn’t pretty but the 4-2 win was enough to get Wagga United off the mark for 2018.
A double to Jack Schein helped Wagga United get the points as they overcame an ordinary start to get the points.
Wagga United were forced to make a number of changes after just 20 minutes but they did the trick despite the home team never producing their best football.
The win unfortunately spoiled the party for Leeton United’s Anthony ‘Dingo’ Mandaglio, who celebrated his 300th first grade match.
Wagga United coach Travis Weir was left scratching his head somewhat after not playing as well as last week, but enjoying a much better scoreline.
“It’s funny with the scoreline. Last week we dominated Henwood, we were all over them and lost 3-0,” Weir said.
“This week, we didn’t play as well and won 4-2.
“We tried to mimic that style (of last week) but we’re still trying to find our identity, in our style as such.
“Last week we lost 3-0 and didn’t deserve to lose the game and today was the opposite, I thought we played poor and we won the game.”
Wagga United scored the first goal of the game 25 minutes in through a penalty to Alec Hope.
Leeton United were quick to level, but the first of Schein’s two goals gave Wagga United a 2-1 lead at half-time.
“It’s always nice to go to half-time with a lead especially when you know weren’t playing well,” Weir said.
“But when you’re not playing well, you’ve got to scrap well and we did that to stay in the game.”
Schein got his second goal 10 minutes into the second half to put Wagga United 3-1 up.
Zac Pinney then sealed the win with Wagga United’s fourth. Leeton United got a late goal to make it 4-2.
Weir had nothing but respect for the visitors.
“We tried to do everything in our power to make it a close contest, in terms of the scoreline,” he said.
“Leeton would be really disappointed not to come away with anything.
“I thought they played really well but it’s always nice to play bad and still come away with the win.”
Andrew McCracken was outstanding in goals for Wagga United and pulled off a number of quality saves.
Wagga also lost Lincoln Weir to a hamstring injury.
In other results, Tolland defeated Cootamundra and Lake Albert was too good for Junee.
