While the appeal will officially be held on May 27 across the country, Leeton is getting in early by holding static collection points throughout this weekend and next weekend.
This will again take the place of the regular door knock and will allow residents to donate when they are out and about in town.
However, residents may still have people knocking on their door, but it’s not a scam.
“The Salvation Army does have people who call up community members and ask them to donate their time to do a door knock of their street or area,” Major Swann said.
“So don’t be alarmed if someone does knock on your door on that day. It’s definitely legitimate.”
The Red Shield Appeal is the Salvation Army's signature fundraising drive, which helps fund its vast network of social and community services.
“I think sometimes people are concerned their money is going out of town and into the city areas,” Major Swann said.
“However, we do have some of the services here that are covered in the appeal. For example our homeless service, so that is helping people locally.
“What we also do is direct people in need here that need these specific programs to the ones in the city. They are then helped in that way.
“It’s a very worth thing to be donating money to.”
The appeal has been held for many years in Australia and 2018 will be no different.
Major Swann encouraged residents to give what they can.
“Times are tough for everyone, but even if you can spare just one dollar, it all helps,” she said.
“Leeton, Narrandera and the surrounding smaller communities have always been very generous during the appeal.” The static donation points will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week, as well as the same days next weekend at Woolworths, ALDI and the Golden Apple Super Store.
