Last Friday the school’s opens and under 16 girls travelled to Wagga for the Riverina Girls Rugby Union Gala Day.
The Leeton High opens team dominated the opposition all day to come away as the Riverina champions as a result.
“This is the first rugby union side at Leeton High to win this title in either boys or girls competitions,” teacher Stuart Stout said.
“Over their three games, the girls scored 73 points while only conceding 15.
“Their commitment to their tackles and aggression at the rucks and mauls was second to none, and they played at a high level of intensity.
“The key to their success in attack was the support for each other in broken play, always having someone backing them up.”
In defence, the girls worked together and often made more ground with their defence by continually stopping the opposition making the advantage line, then driving them back.
The team was made up of young stars:
- Felicity Allen
- Talise Rudd
- Sarah Allen
- Molly Wright
- Meg Gason
- Caitlin Garth
- Moe Lloyd
- Jemma Ah-Nau
- Petra Toia
The team will now travel to Sydney in early August to compete in the CHS Girls Rugby Union State finals.
The U16s played hard all day and never gave up, but unfortunately came away from the day without a win.
“As the majority of the team consisted of girls in years 7 and 8 they did an awesome job at remaining competitive all day,” Stout said.
“The future success of this team will be assured as these girls continue to hone their skills over the next year and are keen for next year’s competition.”
