Miss Steinke has been working at Leeton District Hospital for almost a decade after discovering in her twenties a nursing career was what she was after.
Eight of those years at the Leeton hospital have been spent at Carramar.
Miss Steinke’s nursing studies were undertaken in Queensland via correspondence through the Open Learning Institute.
“You do need to be motivated to do it that way, definitely,” she said.
“I’ve been nursing now for 20-odd years.

“I was a personal carer before then and I worked throughout my studies.”
Apart from her current role in Leeton, Miss Steinke has also worked at Regis Valley View in Queensland.
After moving to Leeton 10 years ago, she would like to eventually finish her career at the hospital here in town.
She said every day was a new challenge, but found her role to also be a rewarding one.
“The best part of the job is listening to the residents here in Carramar and their stories,” Miss Steinke said.
“They have so many stories to tell.
“It’s great celebrating happy events and milestones in their lives.
“The staff here are also very supportive of each other.”
While there are many highs involved in the nursing field, there are also several parts to the job which can be hard.
“Losing a resident is really hard … it’s always so sad,” Miss Steinke said.
“I would say apart from that, there’s not too much else I don’t like about it.
“I’m happy this is the career path I chose.”
Miss Steinke would love to see more young men and women taking up the nursing career.
“You’re always going to have a job … no matter where you are in the world,” she said.
“Nurses will always be needed.
“It’s also great to have more young people coming through because there’s so much knowledge here at the moment with our staff. We want to pass all of that on.”
