Dorothy Eurell, better known as “Dot” to many, recently passed away in Sydney aged 77.
Mrs Eurell had been diagnosed with dementia in recent years, but was also dealt another blow when it was discovered she had pancreatic cancer.
She was known by many for her love of ensuring the shire’s history was not forgotten.
Mrs Eurell was a life member of the Leeton Family and Local History Society, who paid tribute to their friend.
“She was one of our founding members back in 1987 and was the backbone of our society for more than 25 years. being awarded life membership during our 25th year celebrations,” group member and friend Wendy Senti said.
“She took her position on the inaugural committee as research officer and spent the whole time as an active member in this position.
“Dot helped hundreds with their family history, researching the old fashioned way well before the computer era.”
Mrs Eurell also attended seminars, workshops, regional meetings and accepted awards on behalf of the society. She was generous with her time, compiling records, which are still used to this day.
Mrs Eurell was also known for the impeccable way in which she compiled her records, making it easy for those who have followed on in her footsteps.
“She was custodian for the society of anything to do with Leeton,” Mrs Senti said.
“Dot never said no when asked to address meetings spreading the story of Leeton’s history and those who lived in its early days.
“She helped students at the local schools with their projects and addressed classes with stories of the early days in Leeton.”
Mrs Eurell was also vital in helping compile Leeton’s centenary book.
“We take this opportunity to offer our deepest sympathies to her family and to let them know we appreciate all their mother has done for our society and that she will be remembered with much fondness,” Mrs Senti said.
