After suffering a tough defeat to local rivals Griffith in the first round of the competition, the Eagles were able to bounce back in convincing fashion as they came away with a 72-67 win over the Narrandera side.
The men were lead by a great shooting performance from Ty Fletcher who finished the night with 34 points including a run of 19 points in a row in the third quarter to set up the win.
Coach Adam O’Callaghan felt it was a good tough game and was pleased with his side performed.
“It was neck and neck for most of the match,” he said.
“Ty (Fletcher) really stepped it up in the third quarter with his shot selection, and once he got into that mould, he was very hard to stop.”
Heading into this weekend, Leeton will face a physical West Wyalong side awaits who have made a strong start to the season with two wins from two wins in their first two games after they defeated Griffith 49-48 in the women’s and picked up a 53-37 victory in the men’s.
O’Callaghan is hopeful he has found a way Leeton might be able to work around there physicality.
“Where they are physical we will look to run,” he said.
“We are a young team so we should be able to run them out of their defensive game.
“I know that they have one bloke who played in the SEABL (South East Australian Basketball League) down in Victoria.”
The women’s game saw the Leeton side fall by nine points to see them winless after the first two games of the season.
Coach Josh Clyne knows his side need to turn it around quickly after the 72-67 loss and that won’t be an easy task as they hit the road to take on West Wyalong.
“We still haven’t quite clicked yet,” he said.
“We have been working really hard on our shooting percentage. If we can increase our percentage it will go along way to knocking them off hopefully.”
Clyne admits he isn’t too sure what to expect from a Wildcats side who are looking like the early favourites to take out the competition.
“I’m familiar with some of their under 18s, but I’m not too sure how many of them are playing,” he said.
“They have a senior competition in West Wyalong so they should have a good mix of youth and experience.”
The Eagles will travel to the West Wyalong Indoor Stadium with the women’s game getting the action started at 3pm with the men’s clash to start at 5pm.
