Speaking to the crowd gathered at Mountford Park on Saturday morning, councillor Maytom said the occasion was a time to celebrate the country’s rich history and what lies ahead in the future.
“We are a friendly and welcoming town and we should continue to pride ourselves on this,” he said.
“To me, Australia Day is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate our society and our community that is enriched by the diverse cultures, languages, customs, immigrants and refugees who have come here from all parts of the globe.
“(They) join with us in the common bond of citizenship that unites us well.”
Cr Maytom helped lead a citizenship ceremony during the morning, welcoming eight new residents to shire at its formal conclusion.
“I believe that the Leeton community is among the nation’s leaders when it comes to embracing refugees and immigrants, while maintaining a harmonic balance with the traditional Indigenous custodians of this land,” the mayor said.
More Australia Day coverage:
“More than ever we not only recognise those among us who have been nominated for an award today, but we also welcome our newest Australian citizens.”
Cr Maytom was hopeful all residents would find their own way to mark Australia Day and think about everything that makes the country a land of fairness and opportunity for all to enjoy.
The mayor was also on hand to assist with the presentation of this year’s award winners.
