LEETON United have been knocked out of the FFA Cup in the opening round, but it wasn't for lack of trying.
In a see-sawing match, United took on the University of Wollongong at their home turf.
In the pelting coastal rain, the two teams took to a synthetic pitch, but it was UOW who ended up with the eventual win, 4-3.
It was the second time in as many weeks that United had played and the season proper is yet to get underway.
Before heading to Wollongong, United took on Hanwood in a trial match at the town ovals where they recorded a victory.
Leeton United coach Frank Alampi was disappointed the side had departed the FFA Cup early on.
"It is a shame ... we would have had a home game this weekend if we had of fun," he said.
"I've been replaying all of UOW's goals in my head and they weren't great.
"I definitely think we could have beaten them.
"It wasn't that we were playing in the rain or anything like that, we just let in too many easy goals."
United were without some of their key defenders for the match, but overall Alampi said there was plenty to take from the game.
"There's definitely a lot of positives to take from it," he said.
"We were disappointed, but there's still some good things to come from it.
"Apart from the trial game the week before against Hanwood we hadn't played any other matches since last season, so I thought we did well.
"I think it shows we can match it with these sides from the city."
United will now continue on with their pre-season regiment as the opening round beckons.
A draft draw has been completed by Football Wagga and, at this stage, the season is due to kick off the first week of April against Tolland.
In the meantime, the first grade side will be using the time to perfect their game.
"We probably won't have time to have another trial match between now and then," Alampi said.
"Getting some match fitness in the legs is always handy, so these two games have been good for us."
