The spirit has burned brightly in Leeton for decades with no sign of dimming down, which is why this year's Volunteer Week has no shortage of community groups to shine a light on.
Leeton Can Assist is just one of dozens of charity groups that are powered by the blood, sweat, and tears of community minded volunteers.
Dawn Thornton is one of them, and she's been putting in the hard yards for Can Assist for the last 20 years.
She hasn't received a single cent in that time, but what she does get is a feeling that can't be bought with money.
"It's good to know you're helping other people," Mrs Thornton said.
"I enjoy it, and it's a good group."
But none of it would be possible without Leeton's powerful sense of community spirit, according to Leeton Can Assist volunteer Mary Dodd.
"All the money is raised locally, and Leeton is a wonderful community for raising money," Mrs Dodd said.
The money raised goes to help families struggling with cancer, whether that's paying for trips to the hospital, pharmaceuticals, treatment, or other related expenses.
It's a genuine life-saver for families who would otherwise be unable to pay for all the cancer-related costs.
They currently have 40 people on their books with many more in remission, and over the years they've helped thousands of people get through the rough times.
The volunteers help in other ways; they lend a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on for those going through dark times.
"We're not counselors as such, but we do what we can to help," Mrs Dodd said.
They've heard stories of tragedy and heartbreak, but there are happy endings too.
Leeton Can Assist volunteer Leonie Pullen triumphed in her own battle against cancer, and she's now completely cleared.
She's now helping out Can Assist to help other people in their own battles against cancer, and over the years she's seen others come out the other end alive.
Leeton Can Assist is just one of many hardworking volunteer groups that keep Leeton's community spirit burning brightly.
National Volunteer Week is the time for those groups to shine, and it stretches from May 20 to May 26.
