Now over a week since his disappearance, police continue to ask the public for assistance in finding the 34-year-old.
Chief Inspector John Wadsworth said SES were still searching, however police resources have had to pull back.
"Benson Lucas hasn't been located despite an extensive search," he told The Area News.
"Police divers, specially trained searchers and extensive police resources have been used to search the river and near where his gear was found. But to date, it is unfortunate, but we can't keep going wider and wider.
"He has not been located but SES will continue river searches and police will conduct patrols to hopefully locate him."
Mr Lucas is described as Caucasian in appearance, about 175 centimetres tall, has a large build, brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen on July 5 at a Hay residence on Meakes Street.
His absence was noted when he failed to attend an appointment on Monday and officers from the Murrumbidgee Police District were notified.
His vehicle was located on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River on July 9 after police conducted a search at local camp grounds following reports he frequently leaves town for camping.
The State Emergency Services assisted police with a search of the river banks at the time, with a land and water search conducted, however all were unsuccessful.
Police and family have concerns for his welfare and are still appealing for public assistance.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Hay police immediately on (02) 6993 1100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
