Leeton resident Ian "Tiger" Conroy is one of those who has spent much of his working life with one company.
Mr Conroy last week retired after 46 years with Murrumbidgee Irrigation, with the company recognising his decades of service.
He was not the only MI staff member to hang up the tools after a long-running career, with Terry Sivewright, the company's longest-serving employee, also retiring after close to 48 years on the job.
MI chief executive officer Brett Jones paid tribute to their service and the countless hours of hard work they had put in over the years.
"They are both fantastic workers, and well respected by their peers for the job they do," he said.
"Terry and Tiger have seen a lot of change over their careers and they have done a great job adapting to this change.
"I wish them all the best in their retirement- they will be sorely missed."
Mr Conroy started with MI in June 1983.

He has worked in a range of roles throughout the business, starting work in the gangs, before moving into operating the Longreach and, most recently, he has been a field operator (channels).
During their time with the company, both men have worked under several different name changes including: WCIC, WRC, the Department of Water Resources, the Department of Land and Water Conservation, Murrumbidgee Irrigation, Murrumbidgee Irrigation SOC and now Murrumbidgee Irrigation Limited.
The pair were farewelled by their workmates recently and will now start to enjoy the fruits of their labour during their retirement.
