The team at the Leeton Veterinary Hospital would like to introduce our new veterinarian, Dr Sara Hodges. Most people like to ease their way into a new workplace but Sara has jumped right in, she was more than happy to leap at a chance go out to a calving on her own on her second day at work...and she has only just graduated!

Sara grew up around Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW and has always had a passion for caring for animals. Caring for animals was really a calling for Sara, having gained a lot of experience in looking after animals along her journey to become a vet, including being a WIRES carer for our local wildlife.
Before becoming a Veterinarian, Sara obtained a Bachelor of Animal & Veterinary Biology at La Trobe University in Melbourne. Following this, she went to work on a large dairy farm in Finley fulfilling many roles including rearing calves, treating sick and injured cows, assisting during artificial insemination and helping out with all the farm duties.
After a few years on the dairy farm, Sara was accepted into the Veterinary Science course at CSU in Wagga. Along with the study and experience at many Veterinary Practices during this course, Sara was fortunate enough to do a Wildlife Veterinary Medicine internship in South Africa.
This enabled her to study disease management and treatment of African wildlife such as Antelopes and Buffalo as well as being able to educate the locals on pet health care.
Sara's international experience also includes some time in Costa Rica working with dogs and cats in a re-homing shelter. She was able to use her surgical skills in de-sexing these animals before they were sent onto their forever homes.
Sara is particularly passionate about working with large animals and caring for wildlife. She also has a special interest in horses as her partner breeds and trains horses in the sport of cutting.
During her spare time, Sara loves to train her horses for cutting events as well as spend a bit of time in her veggie garden.
She also has several dogs and cats at home that keep her busy when she isn't at work. She also believes strongly in community involvement and she is really looking forward to helping at our Animal Nursery and Big Day Out 4 Pets next month at the Leeton Show.
