THE first drop of rain for 2020 has been welcomed by shire residents, but much more is still needed.
For many it was a novelty to experience a heavy downpour during a quick thunderstorm early on Monday morning.
A decent 28 millimetres of rain had fallen in Leeton in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday, with another two millimetres on top of that by lunchtime.
It is the first significant amount of rainfall the shire has seen not just this year, but for months.
The last time Leeton shire saw a similar total was on November 4 when 31.2mm of rain tumbled down.
The average total amount of rainfall for January in Leeton shire is 29.7mm.
In terms of temperatures, it has been a fairly warm start to the new year.
So far this month January 10 holds the title of being the hottest day, thanks to the mercury climbing to 44.9 degrees.
