The annual Australia Day awards were held under the shade of Mountford Park on a warm Sunday morning where a large crowd turned out to recognise the achievements of many great individuals and groups.
This year a wide and varied group were recognised, but all had one thing in common - their achievements were deemed worthy and great by the anonymous judges.
Taking out the achiever of the year title was Phyllis Guthrie, who is well known for her work with Leeton's Can Assist group.
Mrs Guthrie has been an active member of Can Assist Leeton for over 10 years, serving as president, treasurer and on the welfare team.
She has touched the lives of hundreds of Leeton shire cancer patients with an approach that is calm, professional and caring.
On accepting the achiever of the year title, Mrs Guthrie dedicated the award to all members of Leeton Can Assist.
"This is really for the team of Can Assist, it's not just me who does it," she said. "I'm very honoured to receive this."
Taking out young achiever of the year was Tallis McMillan, an up and coming Aussie Rules sporting superstar. In 2019 Tallis was selected in the Riverina under 12s team for the NSW PSSA and for NSW in the School Sport National Championships in Perth.
He was awarded a Riverina Sporting Blue for high level performances on the national stage and the Bernie O'Connor Award, which is the highest individual accolade in the Riverina PSSA.
Now, he can add young achiever of the year to his growing list.
Group of the year honours went to the Leeton Town Band.
The members of the Leeton Town Band not only play for their own enjoyment, but whenever there is an event on in the shire - no matter how big or small - you will find them playing there.
The band reformed in 2006 and has only gone from strength-to-strength and is now a permanent and love fixture of the community.
