A fire started at the Corbie Hill home around 5.45am on Tuesday, but it was only due to a working smoke alarm that the two occupants were able to escape without serious injury or harm.
Leeton Fire and Rescue NSW and the Yanco Rural Fire Service were called to the house, working together to extinguish the blaze.
Bringing the flames under control took about an hour, with the crews working for a further couple of hours to ensure it was fully extinguished.
Leeton Fire and Rescue Captain Graham Parks said the smoke alarm had saved the lives of the pair.
"It goes to show just how important it is to make sure you have a working smoke alarm ... if this wasn't the case (on this occasion) I do think it could have been a fatal situation," he said.
"They (the occupants) told us they had only in the last couple of weeks changed the batteries and checked the alarm was working correctly.
"At that hour of the morning, you're asleep, so without a smoke alarm to wake them up, it could have been a lot worse.
"It definitely shows why it's so important to check your smoke alarms, change the batteries and make sure they're working."
