Residents across the shire stood proudly at the end of their driveways on Saturday morning just as dawn broke to pay their respects.

Many had decorated their own wreaths, hung the Australian flag, held candles or created their own shrine of remembrance.

As dawn broke over Leeton, Leeton Fire and Rescue sounded their siren while RSL Sub-branch president Peter Williams raised the flags at the cenotaph.

Resident Louis Ramos also contributed his musical talent to the day, playing The Last Post three times throughout the day from his driveway.

Mid-morning Mr Williams and mayor Paul Maytom laid a wreath at the cenotaph, while fellow sub-branch members raised the flags.

At this time, the Leeton Business Chamber sounded the Ode and Last Post over the main street's sound system, while business owners paid their respects by standing outside their doors for a minute silence.

Mr Williams said while Anzac Day in 2020 was far from the norm, he was touched to see just how many people still commemorated the fallen and those who have and are currently serving.

"It was wonderful to see all of the photos people were sharing of how they marked Anzac Day," he said.

"I think it showed while we couldn't all be together, that we really were in some way.

"It means a lot."

Anzac Day in 2020 was unable to be held as it normally would due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on large gatherings of people.

Regardless and in true Aussie spirit, the occasion was not lost in Leeton nor the country as a whole.

It has been a busy period in recent months for the Leeton RSL Sub-branch after resident Belinda Mahalm decided they would be the beneficiary of her fundraising efforts as part of the SunRice Festival Ambassador Quest.

"Belinda has really breathed new life into the RSL ... she has brought a real energy to all of the members and I think that was something we needed," Mr Williams said.

"We are very grateful for all of the hard work she put in."
