In recent years the town has been able to add a burnout pad to its motor sport facilities thanks to a group of hard-working residents, Leeton Shire Council, the Leeton Aerodrome and the co-operation of groups such as Leeton Motorsports Club.
The next venture is a drag strip, according to Carlo Luisi.
The idea will be to bitumen a strip at the Leeton airfield, allowing it to serve several purposes.
All of this is now under a development application that will be submitted to council.
"We're about to put that in, but council have said they do support the idea," Luisi said.
MORE SPORT:
"We've started community fundraising.
"We're selling cubes of concrete for $200 each, which has had good interest so far.
"We've also got a professional grant writer on board and some private funding among the core group. Anyone can donate."
Drag racing has not been held in the Riverina for many years and there is a real interest in the sport.
Should a strip be built in Leeton, Luisi expected hundreds to converge on the town to compete when events are on, not to mention the amount of spectators.
"It's got a really big following and a lot of people do race, but there's no where to do it here," Luisi said.
"It would be a very big deal for Leeton to have one. Ideally we'd like to be added to the drag racing circuit."
