Doctor Simon Wallace from the Leeton Medical Centre has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to training the next generation of general practitioners, by being named the GP Synergy supervisor of the year for the Murrumbidgee and ACT training region.

The long-term supervisor has been supervising since 1998, a year after he started work in Leeton as a GP and anaesthetist at Leeton District Hospital.

Dr Wallace was presented with the honour last week, saying it was as much a credit to his staff and the Leeton Medical Centre over the years as it was his guidance and training support. It

"Our whole philosophy as a practice has always been about exposing young doctors to country practice and what it is like to live and work in a place such as Leeton," he said.

"That's why we have always supported registrars and overseas-trained doctors as well.

"You do get a lot of new people coming through the practice and, as much as they are learning from us, there is a lot they are teaching me and our staff as well."

Dr Wallace said one of the best ways to attract more doctors to regional areas was by giving them the best knowledge and experience while they undertake training here, showing them not just what is on offer professionally, but outside of work as well.

He said that is where the team at Leeton Medical Centre really stood up.

"It's always been a team effort in making new people to our team feel welcome not just at work, but in a social aspect as well," Dr Wallace said.

"We live in such a great community, so it's important we share those aspects with our GP registrars as well.

"There have been many over the years who have stayed on or returned here later on because they have had a positive experience here."

Across the Murrumbidgee and ACT region, there are 210 accredited GP supervisors who are currently training more than 150 GP registrars.
