The pair have taken on the job together as the Hawks start to regroup after having the year away from field due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
An informal pre-season training session is planned for December 12, which will also double as a festive get together to get the playing group in the same place as they start to prepare for the new season.
The club is already making solid headway when it comes to signing players on for 2021, with players such as Ben Watts, Junior Faoa and Tim Toia, Paul Ta'avao, DAndre Williams and several others all making a commitment to the Hawks.
Preston was looking forward to getting the group together next month before likely officially kicking off the pre-season proper until after the Christmas and New Year period.
"We've had a couple of good signings, a few more wouldn't hurt," Preston said.
"After not playing this year, it does feel like we are rebuilding a bit.
"We're looking locally rather than relying on (overseas) imports.
"Our main aim is to have all grades playing, especially reserve grade so we have that depth there."
For Hammond, this will be his first time coaching at a senior level and it's a challenge he has welcomed.
He said having the opportunity to learn the ropes from Preston, while also helping to lead the team from the front would be invaluable.

"Hopefully we have a really successful year and if we can manage to go well enough to make the finals that would be excellent," Hammond said.
"It's going to be a challenge after COVID to get everyone ready after having such a long time off, but everyone is in the same boat.
"Playing and coaching will be a new challenge for me, but being next to Troy that makes a big difference.
"Also having Rodney (Coelli) as the president, he's been around the club a long time, he's a good sounding block for us as well."
Any players interested in joining the Yanco-Wamoon ranks have been encouraged to head along to the pre-season gathering and Christmas event on December 12.
