Leeton Shire Council is working to renew its alcohol-free zone areas, which lapsed at the end of October.

According to council, these zones act as an early intervention measure to prevent the escalation of irresponsible street drinking to incidents involving serious crime.

The alcohol-free zones mostly incorporate the CBD areas of Leeton and Yanco.

Streets such as Maiden Avenue, Gidgee Street, parts of Myrtle Street, Wade Avenue and Reservoir Lane are also included.

Council's manager planning, building and health, Francois Van Der Berg, said the zones are enforceable by police and can attract fines.

The re-establishment of alcohol-free zones in Leeton and Yanco was supported by councillors at the December ordinary council Meeting.

Mr Van Der Berg said council will soon embark on a public consultation process in accordance with the Ministerial Guidelines (2009) to have these zones officially back in place again.

"This will include publication of a notice of proposal in the local newspaper and consultation with key stakeholder groups such as the local police, liquor licensees and various other groups," he said.

More information on the public consultation process will be provided by council early this year.
