With that in mind, a special celebration will be held later this year to mark 50 years since the Leeton Redlegs won the 1971 Aussie Rules grand final against Griffith.

Player and assistant coach at the time, Peter Slattery, is one of several people who have formed an organising committee to commemorate the occasion in Leeton on July 30 and 31.

On July 30 a social get together and dinner will be held at the Hotel Leeton for the players of that team, as well as the committee from that time.

The following day the celebrations will move on to Leeton Showground where the Crows will be taking on Turvey Park.

Supporters, fans, players, committee members and anyone who was associated with the Redlegs at this time and with the Leeton-Whitton Crows today are invited to attend.

The idea will be to watch the football, enjoy a few laughs and a catch up while taking a walk down memory lane.

Prior to the 1971 premiership, the last grand final victory for the Redlegs came in 1958.

The 1971 team was coached by Doug Campbell. "From memory we did win pretty easily, but we were behind and did come back to win," Slattery said.

"You never forget winning a premiership no matter how many years go by.

"This will be a good chance for everyone to get together and catch up.

"Depending on what happens with borders, we've got people coming from all over."

Most of the players and committee from that time have been contacted to save the date.

However, the organising committee is yet to track down several people, including John Gamble, Paul Carrol, John Hawkins, Merv Reynolds, S "Ziggy" Nielson and John Wells.

Anyone who knows of these men have been asked to contact the committee so they can get in touch.

The pair have also asked for the Aussie Rules fraternity in the area to spread the word about the reunion so people can leave the date free.

Official invitations will soon be sent out.
