Traditional Scottish Debutante Ball returns to Leeton for the first time in two years.

An event steeped in more than 60 years of Scottish tradition, the ball will see approximately 20 young women make their debuts for the first time.

For some they will make their entrance into society a year later after COVID-19 restrictions stopped the event going ahead in 2020.

The rehearsals have started, kilts fitted and dresses measured up.

Isabel Ryan, is one of many young girls who have eagerly awaited their opportunity to participate in the ball and make their debut.

"Usually the local girls who choose to participate do so whilst they are in Year 12 however a few of us missed out last year due to COVID-19, so this year we have more than usual," Miss Ryan said.

This year, Miss Ryan will be making her delayed debut with a childhood friend Blayne Thompson, her original partner from 10 years ago when she took part in the ball as a flower girl.

According to event organiser Anne Lepper, the ball will not be operating in full swing like previous years with a smaller capacity, however there is still much to be excited about, especially the dancing.

"Every year the debutantes take part in the Pride of Erin waltz and then perform a specially choreographed routine with their partner," Miss Ryan said.

The ball is also laden in Presbyterian tradition and is one of three debutante balls that occur annually in Leeton.

"There is the Scottish Debutante Ball, the St Josephs Catholic Debutante Ball that occurs over the long weekend and then the Rotary Ball which brings both the Presbyterian and Catholic debutantes together in one night of celebration," Miss Ryan said.

According to Miss Ryan, taking part in the ball is a massive part of her own family's tradition.

"It's just something I have always known, an event that I have been preparing for my whole life".

Isobel's younger sister, Matilda, 15, will also make her debut in the coming years.
