The Hawks were right in the match against Waratahs Tigers before falling away at the end of the game as fatigue set in as they fell to a 34-18 defeat.
Co-coach Kane Hammond was pleased with the performance that his side was able to put out.
"We felt that we competed well last week. We just sort of fell away a bit at the end," he said.
"We are really excited to head out there and hopefully get our first win of the year.
"It was all positive, and we competed really well. We just had a few little things that we need to work on, and we have been working hard on those things at training, and hopefully, we can rectify them."
Meanwhile, after a tough preseason when they were unsure if they would be able to get a team together, the Sharks started their season with a tough road trip to take on the defending champions Darlington Point Coleambally, where they fell 76-6.
Despite the difficult situation, the Sharks find themselves in Hammond knows it will still be a tough trip.
"It is a good chance to get a win, especially when you have to go out there," he said.
"It is never an easy place to win wherever they are on the ladder. We need to be prepared to play well for the 80 minutes."

The Hawks suffered some late withdrawals last weekend with a couple of injuries, but Hammond was hoping that the side will almost be at full strength.
The coach himself won't be taking the field after he sustained a knee injury in the clash with the Waratahs.
"I won't be playing this week, but everyone else will be on deck," he said.
"We will give Paul (Ta'avao)a fitness test on Friday night and see how he pulls up, but at the moment, it looks pretty positive that he will be able to play."
Heading into this weekend's game, Hammond was putting the focus on ensuring his side get to their kicks and make the most of their possession.
"We have to complete at 75 per cent that is our goal, and we want to be able to hold them in the middle of the park with our forwards," he said.
A win this week would be a good place to start for the Hawks as they build into the next two games before they have the bye in round five.
After the trip to Lake Cargelligo, they will return home to take on the Hay before heading to Griffith to take on the Black and Whites.
If they are able to pick up wins in at least two of those games, it will provide a great launching point after their week off when they travel to West Wyalong.
