Have you heard of a psychosocial disability?

A mental health illness resulting in a disability, is referred to as a psychosocial disability. This indicates that your condition has a severe impact on your life and affects your ability to perform daily activities.

Some psychosocial disabilities include anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia.

All of these not only affect the individuals and families, it affects the whole community and this is where MPC and our recovery coaches can assist.

MPC recovery coaches can provide support to people with psychosocial disability to live a full and contributing life.

People can be assisted to take more control of their lives and to better manage complex challenges of day-to-day living.

Through strong and respectful relationships and skilled coaching, participants will be supported to build capacity, including strengths and resilience.

The MPC recovery coaches will work collaboratively with people, their families, carers and supports to design, plan, implement and adjust a recovery plan.

They will collaborate with the broader service system and can assist with the co-ordination of NDIS and other supports.

Roles and responsibilities of recovery coaches involve developing a recovery-enabling relationships, supporting participants' engagement to increase recovery skills and personal capacity, including motivation, strengths, resilience, and decision-making. We also support participants with collaborating with the broader system of supports.

Recovery coaching creates a clear plan of action while using the participants current strengths to reach their desired goals.

Besides helping the participant access and maintain recovery, coaches assist the participants to access mainstream health care, something that is a challenge for someone that has a mental health condition.

Recovery coaching also helps individuals return to employment, find stable housing and transition back into society.

The client self directs their own recovery while our recovery coaches provide expertise and encouragement in supporting the necessary change and attaining the goals that are important to the individual.

All of this impacts the community of Leeton as a whole.
