THE Phantoms third grade team has bid farewell to the 2021 season with a nil-all draw with the Griffith Blacks.
Leeton hit the road for their last game of the 2021 year knowing they wouldn't be making the finals.
An injury to a Phantoms player late in the game and, with no time on, meant the match came to a close with neither side scoring.
The Phantoms decided early on they would only be fielding a third grade side this season when it looked as though numbers would be an issue.
As the season progressed they were able to attract a mix of experience and youth.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The goal for 2022 will now be to field from a first grade side down, according to club president John Hill.
"We had some good first grade players, some of our older guys and kids coming up playing their first year of senior rugby," Hill said.
"That said, the general consensus is we would love to have first grade next year.
"We will probably push harder to get that first grade team up and then fill down from there as opposed to starting at the bottom level."
Helping to do that this year and moving forward will be the coaching staff from this season, which included Quinten Longhurst, Paul Hoffman and David Troldahl.
"We have picked up quite a number of players this year that are more than capable of playing first grade," Hill said.
"I'm not going to say we are going to be finals contenders or anything like that, but I think as far as the club goes and the competition goes, it will be much better if we can push to get a first grade team next year.
"If we lose every game, that's only part of it. The other part of it is the social side and culture side of it, which we've really enjoyed having this year.
"This year that's been fantastic."
The Phantoms will be getting together on August 20 at the Wade Hotel for their annual presentation night starting from 6.30pm.
Players and their families are welcome to attend, price is $20 per person to be paid on the night.
