
MOTORISTS throughout the festive period in Leeton shire appeared to pay little notice to warnings issued by police in the lead up to Christmas and New Year.
Leeton police made many arrests for traffic offences ranging from speeding and disqualified driving to driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
In one matter, police stopped a silver Mitsubishi Lancer in Lightwood Street around 9.40am on December 23. Checks showed the 23-year-old man had been disqualified from driving until January, 2022. He was issued with a court attendance notice.
On Christmas night around 9.50pm, police stopped the driver of a white Ford utility in Belah Street for a roadside breath test. The 56-year-old man returned a positive result and he was placed under arrest and taken to Leeton Police Station where he returned a secondary test of 0.102.
The man was issued with a court attendance notice and his licence was suspended.
Other incidents included:
- About 4.50pm on December 24 a 45-year-old man was driving a white Nissan utility in Ballandry Street at Whitton. Police stopped the driver after he was allegedly seen not to be wearing a seatbelt. The man underwent a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result. He was taken to Leeton Police Station for a secondary test, which returned a reading of 0.090. The driver was issued with a court attendance notice and his licence was suspended.
- About 6.55am on December 24, a 31-year-old man was driving a white delivery van on Wamoon Avenue. He was stopped by police for a roadside breath test, which returned a positive reading. The man was arrested and taken to Leeton Police Station where a further positive reading of 0.075 was returned. He was issued with a court attendance notice.
- On December 29 around 7.15pm a 34-year-old male was driving a red Holden sedan on Yanco Avenue. The man was stopped by police and underwent a roadside breath test. He took was arrested and taken to the Leeton station where a further test returned a positive reading of 0.082. His licence was suspended and he too will front court.
- A 35-year-old woman is also due to front court after she was stopped by police around 1pm on December 31 on Research Road. A road side drug test allegedly returned a positive result, with the driver taken to Narrandera Police Station for secondary testing. Further checks revealed the woman's licence was suspended until October. Police said this was the second time in eight days she had been detected driving.
- Also on December 31, a 32-year-old man was stopped by police on Acacia Avenue. A roadside breath test was conducted and checks on the man's licence showed he had a zero blood alcohol limit. He was taken to Leeton Police Station where he returned a secondary positive test of 0.065. The man was issued with an infringement notice and licence suspended for three months.
- A 22-year-old man will also be facing court this year after he too was arrested for alleged drink driving on Oak Street on December 31. His secondary test at the Leeton station revealed an alleged reading of 0.081.
Police also suspended the licence of a 21-year-old woman on January 3 after she was allegedly detected driving 137kmh in an 80kmh zone on Irrigation Way at Yanco.
When stopped by police the female driver stated she was late for work. She was issued with an infringement notice and her licence was suspended for six months.
IN OTHER NEWS:
A 34-year-old man who was already disqualified from driving until May this year will also need to appear in court after he allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test on January 1.
The man was stopped in Acacia Avenue around 6.25pm where the positive result was returned. He was taken to Narrandera Police Station and issued with a court attendance notice.
