While starting a new career always presents a challenge, Ms Hanlon says the support of the staff has been amazing.
“It’s so much different to what I’m used to. I did all of my placements in big regional referral hospitals along the coast. I’ve definitely been faced with a challenge but I’m really enjoying it so far.”
She spent the last few years studying nursing through the University of New England, but was always curious about rural nursing.
“It has so many opportunities. I’ve always wanted a challenge,” she said.
“Everyone is always talking about how it’s such a different world and I’d really like to experience that.”

While it doesn’t necessarily carry the patient-load of a metro or larger regional area, Ms Hanlon says county nursing provides unique opportunities.
“In a metro hospital you have ten patients every day, whereas here I really get to reflect back on my practice.”
“There is one patient here who calls out my name every time I walk past the room. You really get to know people well. I see these people every day and they know me.”
She encouraged anyone who is looking for something a little different to start their career in the country.
“If you want a challenge or to perfect your nursing skills go rural. Anyone can walk in the door and it’s your responsibility to care for them.”
