A NEW futsal competition in Leeton is aiming to not just encourage participation in the sport, but it will also give residents the chance to have a go at something different.
The Leeton United Football Club is in the process of organising an indoor futsal competition and it's open for all to be part of.
Those interested in playing do not need to have a current association with Leeton United, just a willingness to have a crack.
The competition is set down to start early next month at the Leeton Indoor Stadium. Teams are now able to register for the competition by completing a single form, available at Amato Real Estate.
A maximum of eight players per team is allowed, with juniors and seniors all welcome.
The senior open competition will be a mixed format.
United's Frank Millemaggi said the competition was something the club had been hoping to get up and running for some time.
"We're planning for it to run over two days - Thursdays and Fridays," he said.
"This will be the first time we've done this. We tried many years ago, but it just didn't happen.
"We've got some interest already, so that's great."
Eventually, the club would like to see the competition be held on a regular basis.
For those who do actually play soccer with Leeton United, the club is hopeful it was assist those players into the season.
"It's the fitness, but also the skills, playing indoor futsal does lift the skills," senior player Dan McKenzie said.
Futsal is basically a variant of soccer, but it is played on a hard court, mainly indoors, and between a smaller amount of players.
It is also played with a smaller, lower bounce ball, which is one of the aspects as to how it helps develop skills and better ball control.
"We're really hoping to see as many teams as possible ... we know it might clash with some things, but it would be good to have solid numbers for this first competition," Millemaggi said.
Team registration forms must be return to Amato Real Estate with the required registration money, which is $320 per team.
Split between eight, the cost is only $40 per person for the entire competition.
