That's precisely what went down in Leeton on Sunday as residents who were part of fundraising, volunteering and donating during the recent bushfire crisis were thanked for their efforts at a community barbecue.
Emergency services personnel and volunteers were also part of the day and they were lauded for their actions over the course of the summer and prior to the hot months.
The barbecue was organised by Sandra Nardi and her band of volunteers who also co-ordinated efforts during the peak of the crisis to collect donations and goods from members of the Leeton community to be sent to the areas and towns that were hit hard.
They also worked for some time after the immediate threat was over to do up supply packs for Rural Fire Service volunteers from both the MIA and where they were needed on the ground.
Miss Nardi said the idea behind the barbecue was a simple one.
"We wanted to do something where we could bring everyone together that has helped, donated or been down to the fires whether as a volunteer or fighting the actual fires ... we wanted to say thank you to everyone," she said.
"We couldn't believe the generosity here in Leeton.
"Straight away when everything was happening people were donating items and money.
"It was just amazing to see."
MORE NEWS
The fires in the state and across the country were some of the worst and most devastating to date.
RFS personnel from the MIA were constantly on the frontline working to battle the blazes, as well as helping communities recover and pick up the pieces.
"We planned to have this day just as we were finishing up at the collection depot ... there were so many people who we wanted to thank and this was a way where we could do that," Miss Nardi said.
"It's really just all about having everyone come together as well."
Communities who did suffer from the fires still need help and it will be important their plight is not forgotten despite all of the other major news events currently going on in the world today.
