Despite the result coach Frank Alampi was left frustrated by his side's performance.
"It is days like today why you don't enjoy coaching and drive you insane," he said.
"It was a successful trip in regards to getting the three points but nothing else.
"They were gutsy and only got a goal from a poor mistake from a free-kick but the performance was horrendous. It was probably our worst performance of the year to tell the truth."
United took the lead after Pablo Quarin pinched the ball in the midfield and played a ball forward for Fred Gardner. Gardner was able to make a break down the wing before crossing the ball into the box, and in an attempt to clear the ball a Tumut defender turned the ball into his own net.
Conor Edenden headed home United's second after getting to the near post and winning the aerial battle to score from an Adam Raso corner.
Alampi felt his side got frustrated with the fact they weren't further ahead.
"In the first half their goalkeeper made a number miraculous saves," he said.
"The first 20 minutes was good actually, but then we scored, and the boys got frustrated. We had a couple of chances cleared off the line and a couple of handballs which should have been penalties, and we hit the post.
"They were frustrated that we weren't ahead by more, and we lost our composure and shape and proceeded to play like individuals instead of being a team."
Given Leeton were unable to pick up points from their trip to Tumut last season and that proved costly Alampi was pleased his side were able to escape with points.
"Last year we weren't able to, and this year we did," he said.
"We came here to get the three points, so we will just move on to next week."
With Hanwood drawing with Young at home on Sunday, Leeton United have leapfrogged the Griffith-side into the top four and will be looking to continue their move up the table this weekend.
They will head to Wagga to take on South Wagga on Sunday for their third straight away game.
