The historic trophy, which is played in honour of John Gibson Youll, who was the manager of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area up until 1947, sees the winner of the major singles take on the winner of the minor singles, a real David versus Goliath affair.
In 2020 this battle was between Brendon Donnelly and Tim Barnes.
As the winner of the club's major singles, Barnes was forced to give Donnelly a 10-shot start, but this was thought to be of little consequence to the result and, when after only 15 ends, Barnes shot to the lead, the engravers were reaching for the trophy to place his name on it.
However, Donnelly steeled himself and slowly, but surely inched his way back into the contest.
Picking up consecutive shots he put some scoreboard pressure onto Barnes, whose line suffered a little as a result.
Donnelly was able to win five of the last six ends and ran out a 25 to 18 winner.
Barnes, who has had a stellar year in the COVID-affected bowl's season, was disappointed with the result, but heaped praise on his opponent stating he "was just too consistent and handled the conditions better than I did".
Donnelly was surprised with his victory, but added "it was a very satisfying win".
The final club championship for the year, the mixed pairs, is currently taking place at the L&D.
