This is exactly what happened for two of Leeton's RSL Sub-branch life members recently where they were gifted a special quilt from the "higher ups" to honour their many decades of service to country and the community.
NSW RSL state president Ray James and his wife Pauline, who is the RSL Auxiliaries co-ordinator, made a trip to Leeton for a special meeting, but to also recognise the ongoing efforts of veterans Heather Whittaker and John Power.
"Pauline presented three specially-made, beautiful quilts to (Heather and John)," Leeton RSL Sub-branch member Karleen Reilly said.
"(They) have given exceptional ongoing service to the veteran community.
"The 'thank you for your service quilts' are for those who have served in the defence force, assisted the RSL in promoting the organisation, helping veterans and families and going above what is expected of any member of RSL."
Ross Filmer of Ungarie was also on hand to accept a quilt for his service.
The quilt project has been a successful mission for Mrs James to show recognition to the deserving members.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"She has a team of very wonderful willing ladies who volunteer to make these outstanding quilts," Mrs Reilly said.
"A significant number have already been presented over the years to a long list of deserving members."
Mrs Whittaker served during World War II and is Leeton's oldest veteran from that conflict.
Mr Power served in Vietnam and for many years was the president of the Leeton RSL Sub-branch.
