These volunteers clock hours upon hours every year for the service, driving older residents to medical appointments, check ups, assisting with grocery shopping and much more.
With more volunteers always needed in both Leeton and Narrandera, Maureen Sheldrick has shared why she loves taking part and helping others.
Mrs Sheldrick has been on the volunteer roster for about six years, starting soon after she retired.
"I had been working in a disability sector and I wanted to continue doing something to help our community," she said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I have gained a lot from it over the years. You form friendships with the people you are helping and sometimes you can be the only person they see that day, so it's really something special and important to be involved in."
Some days are busier than others, but can involve picking up a client and taking them to doctor's appointments, hospital visits, day surgeries and more.
"Even little things like chatting with people on the way to these appointments, it can help lessen anxiety and just give them someone to talk to," Mrs Sheldrick said.
We love our volunteers and we certainly wouldn't be able to have this great program without them.
- Stacie Mohr, Narrandera Shire Council
Becoming a volunteer is simple and it is as easy as touching base with community transport in either Leeton or Narrandera.
"We're always after more volunteers and we provide the support needed to become one ... it is a simple and easy process," said Stacie Mohr from Narrandera Shire Council.
"We love our volunteers and we certainly wouldn't be able to have this great program without them.
"Last year was obviously difficult because of COVID where we had to stand down most of our volunteers for months at a time.
"Some didn't return, so we are definitely always looking for more volunteers."
