Along with speeding and fatigue, drink driving is one the biggest causes of death and serious injury on NSW roads.
In 2019, there were 61 people killed and 286 people seriously injured in crashes involving drink driving.
To help curb drink driving, Leeton shire's take away bottle shops are participating in a joint campaign - What's Your Plan B? - in partnership with Leeton Shire Council.
The campaign aims to have everyone think about "what's your plan B?" on getting home safely next time people head out for a drink.
The Plan B campaign is a state-wide initiative that began in August 2012.
IN OTHER NEWS:
It is about making positive choices to get home safely after a night out, highlighting that driving is not an option.
The Leeton shire participating businesses are BWS, Celebrations, Bottlo Drive Thru and Golden Apple Liquor.
Each venue will run a competition where patrons nominate their "plan B" for getting home safely and go in the draw for a chance to win a XTM swag valued at $300.
"The prize reinforces the plan B message - that there's always an alternative to drink driving," council's road safety officer Stephanie Puntoriero said.
"Leeton Liquor Accord (comprising local pubs and clubs) are making a strong stand and being proactive in discouraging patrons and customers from driving after drinking.
"The best advice for people planning a night out is to leave the car at home. That way there's no temptation to try and drive home."
Police are out and about conducting random breath tests and mobile drug testing, making the chance of getting caught drink or drug driving even greater.
A new law took effect on June 28, introducing new offences with harsher penalties if a driver is detected with an illegal level of alcohol, as well as illicit drugs present in their system.
If you are caught drink driving over the legal limit in NSW, even if it's a first-time or low-range offence, police may also suspend your licence immediately.
