Last week first grade’s coaching staff made it clear they wanted the team to improve and be rid of silly errors which were costing them games.
Early on in Sunday’s match it seemed one of those mistakes had reared its head in a case of bad luck when Nick Trofogli scored an own goal.
However, he was able to redeem himself later in the match to not only score a goal for United, but be named man of the the match as Leeton went on to take out a 4-1 victory.
Assistant coach Joe Trifogli said the team were impressive on the day.
“Myself and fellow assistant coach Frank Alampi tried out some position changes and it really seemed to work for us,” he said.
“I thought we were just really good across the park.
“Everyone really did their job and did it well.”
Apart from Nick Trifogli, United’s other goals went to Markus Jogi, who scored a double, with Anthony Trifogli also finding the net.
It was also a good day out for Michael Di Lorenzo, who registered his 150th first grade game, along with Jarrod Sillis who made it to the 100 mark.
Trifogli said Leeton’s speed and ability to move the ball around also worked in their favour.
“South Wagga started out pretty quick as well … when Nick scored that own goal, we were a bit worried because in the past when a team scores we seem to drop our heads,” he said.
“This time it didn’t happen. They got on with the job and to Nick’s credit he really redeemed himself.”
Leeton United now moves into fifth position on the ladder, having won two of their four matches so far this season.

With coach Mick Doolin back on deck this weekend, Trifogli was hopeful the side could continue their form.
“If we can play like that every weekend that would be fantastic,” he said.
“We’ve got a very important game coming up on Saturday night against Lake Albert, so it’s good for us to be going into that game off a win.
“The boys were very happy.”
As Trifogli said, the side will now turn their attention to their night match with Lake Albert on Saturday.
Other results: Reserve grade lost 3-1, third grade won 1-0 and United’s women’s side went down 4-2.
