Leeton's Roxy Theatre will soon begin Stage 1 of its renovations pending government approval

Jackie Kruger, Council's GM of the Leeton Shire spoke exclusively with The Irrigator about what the redevelopment and renovations of the Roxy Theatre will look like and when we can expect work to begin.

"Currently the council has a development application in with the Western Joint Regional Planning Panel that has been prepared by an independent party on council's behalf," Mrs Kruger said.

"We are currently waiting for it to be assessed."

According to Mrs Kruger, the Leeton Shire Council is feeling optimistic that the application makes a solid case.

"In our application we paid particular attention to the heritage of the building, we would like to protect this and preserve it for future generations to enjoy," Mrs Kruger said.

"We feel that development approval is imminent, within the month, work to begin as soon as possible once we have the approval,"

The first stage of planned redevelopments will see the existing footprint of the theatre built upon, which funding has already been secured for.

The second stage however will see the renovation of two neighboring buildings that the council has bought to be added to the Roxy to help create a small theatrette.

Funding for the second stage has yet to be attained, however the council has applied to the Building Better Regions fund and is awaiting a result which is expected mid year.

If the funding is not attained, then the theatre will only see the first stage become a fully realized reality.

"After both stages are completed the venue will become a performing arts institute. A very contemporary theatre that offers something for everyone," Mrs Kruger said.

"It won't just be for acting, the technical and production capabilities and opportunities will be there also."

The Roxy Institute of Performing Arts will provide training to talented creatives across the Riverina, helping them ascertain employment in the arts industries.

Additionally, the renovations will see new toilets, a new foyer and most excitingly more accessible entry to not only the theatre but to the stage for disabled performers or crew members.

A new civic space for the community will also be made available as a result of the installation of moveable seats that will provide better line of sight for audience members.

Renovations are expected to conclude in the first half of 2022.
