The town’s Friends of Luro group is again sponsoring students in Timor Leste to ensure they are given a quality education.
This year they are students Mateus, Oldegar and Ricsonjo are attending year 12 at Fatumaca Technical Secondary School in Timor Leste.
Fatumaca school teaches about electricity, mechanics, electronics and building. Important abilities for a young nation keen to develop its own infrastructure.
“Friends of Luro provides scholarships for students such as Mateus, Oldegar and Ricsonjo,” Friends of Luro secretary-treasurer Eric Hudson said.
“This year we are providing accommodation and education for eleven senior secondary students and three trainees.”
Friends of Luro has built up a network of contacts to allow the efficient use of donated funds.
The ambassador of Timor Leste to Australia visited Leeton early in May to speak to the Rotary Conference, which was well received.

“It is good news that the maritime border between Australia and Timor Leste is finally sorted,” Mr Hudson said.
“Timor Leste is one of our closest neighbours and the border dispute has been a reason for Timorese ill feeling toward Australia.
“Attempts to invite Timor Leste seasonal workers to our district are being made to help with our harvesting needs.
“Unemployment in Timor Leste is very high so workers are keen to work a harvesting season in Australia and support their families in Timor.”
